A Note About Co-op Workshops

Unless otherwise noted, all workshops will be held from 10am-noon, in Janet MacLeod's Studio, upstairs at the Adamant Co-op. If you have ideas for a workshop you would like to hold, we'd be more than happy to set it up! No expertise necessary, just a love for doing something and the wish to share it with others in a really informal, low pressure environment. Contact Janet MacLeod at the co-op: 223-5760.

Conversation with Tony Klein, 11am

The Legislature is Back in Town! We've lost our downtown parking, but what have we gained?

Come get a basic introduction to how citizens can get involved in state government beyond voting every two years. Learn how bills are proposed, how to track issues that are important to you, and how to weigh in on what you care about the most.

This conversation will be about the *how* of policymaking, not the *what* of any particular issue.

Led by the ever capable Rep. Tony Klein of East Montpelier, with goodies provided by Helen Labun Jordan. We'll meet in the Coop, and move upstairs if there are lots of people.

Sunday, February 07

Drawing Workshop #2

9:30 in Janet's Studio
Our focus in these workshops is to loosen up and to learn to look. Ink and brush often has a mind of it’s own which can free us up to enjoy the experience of the line as it flows onto the paper. We will also continue with contour and gesture exercises finishing up the session with longer drawing

Saturday, February 13

Black Fly Festival Organizational meeting, 10am

Spring is sprung. Is bird is on the wing....oh, sorry, we got delusional there for a minute. But spring will indeed return some day and with it the bugs we love to hate AND the Adamant Black Fly Festival. Whatever your skill, ability, interest, there is a place for you in the grand festivities! So stop by the store and help plan this year's extravaganza.

If you can't make the meeting and have ideas/want to be involved, email adamantc@sover.net.

Sunday, February 14

Papier Maché Workshop

Think Mardi Gras -Think Valentine’s Day - Think Black Fly Festival. You need a Fancy Hat - a Wild Mask out of Papier Mache and other recycled flotsam and jetsam. Those gold candy wrappers, A Miguel Blue Chips bag turned to it’s inside silver, the card board roll from your paper towels...... before you throw it away, look at it’s possibility as a festive decoration. We will have lots of materials to work with as well so come make something outlandish, elegant, silly, fun for you or some innocent bystander to wear in the Parade.

Saturday, February 20

Sunday, February 28

Community Building and Potluck Brunch, 10-12, Community Club

Good food fuels creativity in this interactive workshop led by new Coop member Cathy Wisloski. Cathy, who has years of experience marketing specialty food and wine products, has great ideas to help us strengthen our community now and in the years to come.

So dust off your favorite quiche and kugel recipes, and come prepared to talk about how the Coop makes your life easier, richer, better. Your insights will help us define the unique benefits and features of the Coop, and stay true to our values as we move into the new decade. More fun than you can shake a double yoked egg at!

9:30 at Co-op (or look for group across from Alison’s and Kip and Sam’s). Bring your snowshoes or skis and meet at the Co-op to pack the trails in the Town Forest. A great way to share the packing and if you don’t know the trails already, to learn how wonderful they are. Winter Workshop Series: Adamant Italian Gardens Charrette*

3pm at the Co-op. Remember those lovely summer evenings at the Adamant Cookouts? Last summer some of our space artists (namely Kathleen and Alison, ) were
envisioning Italian Piazzas, patios, gardens - a truly enchanting space behind the Co-op. So Kathleen drew up a plan of what’s there now, we took some photos after the tents came down and we thought it would be fun to get together in the snowy months and come up with a plan for making the tent, the gardens, the traffic flow, the oven all work better and be even more wonderful.

INDIGO & SHIBORI DYEING with Karen Henderson

Shibori is the Japanese word for shaped resist dyeing. (Here we'd know it as tie-dye--using rubber bands to make patterns with the folded cloth.) Karen will be showing a couple of the traditional Japanese hand stitching methods to create patterns. Wherever the cloth is stitched and pulled tight will stay white, thus 'resist' -ing the dye. Indigo has a long tradition in a lot of countries--it's the plant that creates that wonderful deep blue color. We'll be using a modern version of it to shorten the process, but it's really like magic because the fabric looks green in the bath and the indigo actually reacts to oxygen and changes to blue once exposed to the air. more dipping = darker color. while she knows there's a scientific explanation, Karen prefers to believe it's magic. :)

PLEASE BRING WITH YOU:
Wear clothes that can get dirty.
Rubber gloves (long cuff is best, buy at supermarket)
hand sewing needle
sewing thread in a dark color
pencil and sharpener
plastic grocery bags for taking wet samples home
*patience to hand sew small pieces
Optional to bring: one 100% white cotton t-shirt in case we have time and dye enough. $5
