A Note About Co-op Workshops

Unless otherwise noted, all workshops will be held from 10am-noon, in Janet MacLeod's Studio, upstairs at the Adamant Co-op. If you have ideas for a workshop you would like to hold, we'd be more than happy to set it up! No expertise necessary, just a love for doing something and the wish to share it with others in a really informal, low pressure environment. Contact Janet MacLeod at the co-op: 223-5760.

15th Annual Blackfly Festival

Forget about fiddleheads, peepers, or maple sugaring. Blackflies are the real harbinger of spring in central Vermont.

Come celebrate the bug we love to hate at the 15th annual Adamant Blackfly Festival on Saturday, June 3, beside the Adamant Co-op on the beautiful Adamant Music School green.

It's more fun than thought humanly possible: a nature walk, Blackfly Fashion Show, parade, blood and bug themed Pie Contest, writers' slam, and live music, great food, and zany family fun all day long!

All activities are free and open to all ages. Rain or shine.

Co-op Birthday Dinner and Auction

The Adamant Co-op, the country’s oldest continuously operating food cooperative, just turned 80. To celebrate, we’ve published the ADAMANT CO-OP COOKBOOK — an illustrated love letter to our community, with recipes from community dinners, vignettes of life in a small Vermont village, and original artwork by Janet MacLeod. Janet's lively, impressionistic works are full of the pleasure and celebration of eating.

The celebration continues on October 24, with a DINNER GALA followed by a LIVE AUCTION of Janet's original cookbook artwork.

First, we feast. Then poet Geof Hewitt will preside over the sure-to-be-spirited bidding of Janet's oils, watercolors, and line drawings. The evening will be more fun than you can shake a Mini Chicken Empanada with Mole Poblano at. And all proceeds support our beloved Co-op.

Conversation with Tony Klein, 11am

The Legislature is Back in Town! We've lost our downtown parking, but what have we gained?

Come get a basic introduction to how citizens can get involved in state government beyond voting every two years. Learn how bills are proposed, how to track issues that are important to you, and how to weigh in on what you care about the most.

This conversation will be about the *how* of policymaking, not the *what* of any particular issue.

Led by the ever capable Rep. Tony Klein of East Montpelier, with goodies provided by Helen Labun Jordan. We'll meet in the Coop, and move upstairs if there are lots of people.

INDIGO & SHIBORI DYEING with Karen Henderson

Shibori is the Japanese word for shaped resist dyeing. (Here we'd know it as tie-dye--using rubber bands to make patterns with the folded cloth.) Karen will be showing a couple of the traditional Japanese hand stitching methods to create patterns. Wherever the cloth is stitched and pulled tight will stay white, thus 'resist' -ing the dye. Indigo has a long tradition in a lot of countries--it's the plant that creates that wonderful deep blue color. We'll be using a modern version of it to shorten the process, but it's really like magic because the fabric looks green in the bath and the indigo actually reacts to oxygen and changes to blue once exposed to the air. more dipping = darker color. while she knows there's a scientific explanation, Karen prefers to believe it's magic. :)

PLEASE BRING WITH YOU:
Wear clothes that can get dirty.
Rubber gloves (long cuff is best, buy at supermarket)
hand sewing needle
sewing thread in a dark color
pencil and sharpener
plastic grocery bags for taking wet samples home
*patience to hand sew small pieces
Optional to bring: one 100% white cotton t-shirt in case we have time and dye enough. $5
